We thought it was about time to add some more delicious coffee to our offering and where better to start than with the original speciality coffee Social Enterprise.

What we love: Old Spike’s primary mission is to help reduce homelessness in the UK through training and employment within speciality coffee. Whether that's assisting the head roaster at the roastery or working in one of the cafes as a barista, Old Spike are committed to supporting their trainees from training to employment.

Old Spike's ethics are based on the principles of direct trade, quality and seasonality. Sourcing direct from the country of origin and working only with high grade, seasonal coffee, they are able to secure a better price for the farmer which can be 4-5 times higher than the Fairtrade minimum.

RED GRAPE - DRIED APRICOT - CACAO NIBS

Region: Kayanza

Municipality: Runinya

Producer: Izuba Washing Station

Variety: Red Bourbon

Process: Natural

Altitude: 1500 - 1700 MASL

Izuba meaning “sun” in Kirundi, is located in Runinya, Kabarore Commune, of Kayanza Province. This full bodied, natural processed Red Bourbon is incredibly easy to drink, with sweet subtle notes of apricot and a pleasant lingering cacao nib finish. Perfect for espresso and ideal for people who like a strong, full bodied filter.

The Izuba washing station is set close to a nearby river, providing a vital and regular freshwater source for coffee processing. Coffees from Burundi are at risk of what we call the ‘potato defect’, quite literally the coffees can taste like potato. To combat this the Izuba washing station has implemented extensive wet sorting; post pulping, the beans are still wet allowing the potato defects to be visible and sorted. The remaining pulp is turned into fertiliser and redistributed to local farmers to add nutrients to their soil. The care placed in sorting not only gives us the tastiest coffee from the region, but it also provides seasonal employment for around 250 locals with pay well above the market rate.
